22. The parallels between Money and 1984 are extensive. Like Winston Smith, Self is under constant surveillance. In place of O'Brien, the state operative who slowly initiates Smith into the truth of his utter imprisonment, Money has Goodney, who shadows and psychologically terrorizes Self. Martina Twain offers Self love and hope, which is also what Julia gives Smith. But just as Smith finally turns in Julia, so Self betrays Martina. |
