15. A separate essay could be written on the autobiographical matrix of Money, the extent of which this chapter can only suggest. Self, like Amis, had an American mother, and spent some of his childhood in New Jersey. Self's relationship with Martina Twain, who is knowledgeable about aesthetics, alludes to Antonia Philips, the American professor of aesthetics Amis married in 1984. The fact that Martina functions as the American double of the British character Martin Amis takes on added significance in light of this fact.
