Reading & Revising the Literary Canon The desire to compile lists of "great," "important," and "classic" texts lives on (from the Mortimer Adler-inspired "Great Books" program and list to the Modern Library's "100 Best Novels" to the "Great Books Book Room"). In this context the Booker Prize is worth a special mention. The prize, awarded anually sice 1969 to the best full-length novel written in the British Commonwealth published in the preceding 12 months, is one way of gauging the emerging canon of British fiction.
