Amis Bookshelf--5

bulletJames Diedrick (I can't resist offering a few suggestions of my own, ranging from a few neglected classics to some contemporary novels I've recently enjoyed):

bulletThe Private Confessions of a Justified Sinner, by James Hogg. The first great "psychological gothic" and a forerunner of my next recommendation:
bulletThe Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, by Robert Louis Stevenson. Forget the kitschy movie with Spenser Tracy; remember that this was one of Vladimir Nabokov's favorite novels:--and one of the inspirations for Amis's Other People.

And here are a few more, some linked to on-line reviews I have written:
bulletJack Maggs, by Peter Carey. You can read my full review of this Dickensian fantasia at the Authors Review of Books.
bulletElementals: Stories of Fire and Ice, by A.S. Byatt. I reviewed this one in The Richmond Review, June 1999.
bulletChicago Stories, by James T. Farrell. Reviewed in Authors Review of Books, no. 10, May 1999.
bulletAmsterdam, by Ian McEwan. Reviewed in Authors Review of Books, no. 9, January 1999.
bullet Haroun and the Sea of Stories and East, West by Salman Rushdie.
