Never really understand those 'state of' arguments. Why spend time on cyclical shifts? After all, it's when noone's doing anything interesting that someone will come along & surprise. It was interesting that even Kingsley in McCrackers's item below was having to argue with (the young) MA's ridiculous blanket dimissal of American writing.
I agree with you on Cusk - I read Saving Agnes & quite enjoyed it (as you say, perhaps slightly reminiscent of early MA like Other People). Ever read Edward St Aubyn? Quite liked his stuff as well (has evidently read Pynchon or perhaps H. S. Thompson). Another recommendation I recently picked up on was from Rushdie - Cosmicomics by Calvino, which is weird & wonderful.
