We don't and we can't, i think that's the idea, its more of Amis' Nabokovian questioning of narrative, of him asking us to ask ourselves "Who's telling me this story and can I trust them?" To which the answer, to the second part at least, is generally "not likely mate". Can you think of more than two Amis narrator's you'd lend a fiver to an expect to get it back?
