MARTIN AMIS SEZ: "For me, tennis is a kind of middle-aged obsession rather than something I have always been good at. I'm a total hack really, but I have lessons on and off. I play singles mostly, which is a killer. The tennis game in *Money* was a true story and the next person on the court was Billie Jean King and that spurred me on to do something about my game. I have a hard core of people I play with and I wear respectable tennis clothes---not like Agassi---no traffic light get-up. I play all the year round and have been playing for about 10 years. I don't really consider myself good but I am hard to beat. I'm pretty competitive. I always think you can judge a player by their second serve. My second serve is top-spun. As you get older your technique gets a little better but everything else gets worse---you get slower and more stupid. A lot of my game is to do with keeping my temper. I don't lose my temper in real life but I do on the court---it's McEnroeism, the quest for perfection, and then terrible things happen." [From *The Independent* newspaper. June 24, 1990.]
