According to my dad, who went to school in Liverpool at around the same time as Lennon, the line 'yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dog's eye. comes from a 50s school yard skipping rhyme which goes:
"Yellow matter custard, green snot pie, all mixed up in a dead dog's eye".
