Just been re-reading Heavy Water, and, having thought about thespianizing Amis before, I can't help but bankroll the idea of turning The Janitor on Mars into a great play:

Act 1: narrator setting the scene at Sheperds Lodge. Papa Jones disinfecting a toilet (some such shite)--through the tale of Timmy. TV in upper corner or projected on some gossamer or big screen with CNN reports--growing into prominence. Act 2: The brilliant arrogance of our robot soliloquist. Have our Incarcion, et al seated in the audience with mics--minimal intrusion with max. buzz for the feeble Q&A. Backdrop: TV playing hackneyed scenes of corresponding amoeba, a-bombs, pollution, etc. interspersed with dramatic blackouts. Act 3: Pop and the visible/audible transformation, quickly fading to the dominating backdrop--now robot on Mars with his, ...Now get the hell out. Go. Walk out of here with your eyes on the fucking floor. Exit through the left hall. Follow the goddamned signs." Exit STL Timmy and Pop with the seated actors leaving through the aud.'s exits.
