I'm beginning to feel really sorry for Mr Cadwaller and his London Fields team. I think Amis fans have got to learn to be less precious about his work and not always assume the worst.
I think there is the potential for a film version of the book to be pretty good but Amis obsessives want to do everything they can to ensure it is still-born. Why?
Even if it is shit, that won't change anything about your affection for the original novel. So the general public might think dimly of MA himself.....So what? Most of us enjoy the exclusivity of being MA fans. We can't lose. Good film: we tell everyone I told you so but the book was much better. Bad film: we call them all philistines and claim the book was much better. Either way the novel (The important text) wins.
Having said all this I'd like to make it known to MR Cadwaller that I am fantastically good looking and a social chameleon who could play both Guy Clinch and Keith Talent if required. I was hoping to break into the public conscience via Eastenders or Man O Man but since this has come up I am prepared to alter my plans a little.
